How long does the arch expansion process take?

The active expansion phase typically lasts 3 to 6 months, depending on the required width. However, the appliance must remain in place for an additional 4 to 6 months to allow the newly formed bone in the maxillary suture to calcify and stabilize.

Patients may experience a feeling of “pressure” across the bridge of the nose or cheekbones immediately after an activation (a “turn”). This is a sign the appliance is working. Most patients adapt within 48–72 hours. Over-the-counter anti-inflammatories are usually sufficient for any minor discomfort.

Yes, a temporary gap (known as a diastema) often develops between the two upper front teeth during active expansion. This is a positive clinical sign that the jawbone—not just the teeth—is widening. This gap typically closes naturally or is corrected during the subsequent braces/Invisalign® phase.
