How Early Should You Bring Your Child to the Dentist?

When you’re a new parent, there’s so much to learn about regarding your child’s health. And one of the most common questions that we get asked is “when should I bring my child to the dentist?” If you’re unsure of the answer, here’s everything you need to know to ensure that your child is receiving the best oral care.

The First Appointment

We recommend that your child’s first appointment should happen right around their first birthday. During their visit, we’ll carefully examine their mouth to look for any potential issues that could cause any problems in the future. Having them visit us this early in their development gives you the opportunity to ask us any questions you may have regarding their early dental health. We’ll even offer your child’s first appointment free of charge!

The Initial In-Depth Exam

Most children start developing their primary teeth around the age of four. That’s why we recommend you schedule a thorough examination as soon as these teeth come in. That way, we can ensure those primary teeth are developing properly before any of the permanent teeth start to erupt. During this visit, we’ll give your child a modified version of the adult examination that will include a teeth cleaning and fluoride application. We’ll also make time to answer any questions or concerns you may have and to discuss any treatment plans and home care recommendations.

Ongoing Dental Care

After your child’s initial exam, it’s important to set up regular dental appointments going forward. This will allow our team to teach your child the proper brushing techniques and how to take care of their teeth on their own. It will also provide them with a routine that will help your child to become accustomed to visiting the dentist. The earlier you initiate a dental routine with your child, the more likely they will continue to return throughout their adulthood.
